February Workshop Attendees!

By Personal, WorkshopsOne Comment

Another boudoir workshop is just around the corner and like always, we ask our lovely photog attendees to fill out a little questionnaire so we can get to know them better before they arrive!  Here it is for you all to enjoy and can’t wait to meet you all in a couple weeks!  This looks like its going to be another fun bunch. 🙂  If you have been thinking about bringing your boudoir photography business to the next level, you may want to consider attending a workshop with The Boudoir Divas!  Not only do you learn literally EVERYTHING there is to know about running a boudoir business, you get to leave with a killer portfolio, and meet other photographers and have an overall blast at our San Diego Studio!  Here is what one past attendee has said:

I am SO glad I attended the San Diego workshop as I not only had a great time and took some phenomenal pictures for my portfolio, but I learned so much about how to launch a boudoir photography business.  As a new boudoir photographer, it was priceless to learn the tips, tricks, secrets, and basics of launching my business the right way from the original Divas!  I told my husband everything we did and he nailed it – “you went to school!”.  I don’t remember school being this fun!  If I did, I would have paid more attention!  Thanks Diva Team!       –Anita Lubke

Our next workshop is April 12-14th and spots are still open!  You can read more about our workshops HERE and you can register by going to our BOUDOIR SHOP.

I’m really excited about everything, the studio, meeting you all, learning all this cute and so interesting things about boudoir, the marketing tips and so on..last but not least, I get to travel to San Diego from Italy which is waaaay cool, so i get to tour a very little bit California with my best friend, and I think this trip will definitely be remembered!!
2. What do you hope to learn from the DIVAS?
I don’t think that there’s something that I don’t want to learn, also because, Italy is really remained in the first 90’s when we talk about photography, so I would love to hear and experience everything different from what I’m used to see and to deal with people more open minded in the field.

NEVER!! This is my first time in the west coast and I’m sure I’ll have some serious problems when I’ll have to come back home!
4. What is your FAVORITE thing to photograph?
I would say definitely people. They’re such an interesting subject to have in front of the lens, but I like everything..as long as there’s some good ole natural light around, everything take this beautiful atmosphere that is worth to catch!
5. Starbucks or Coffee Bean (or neither)?
Well..since I’m in Italy we have neither of these two, I’ve only tried Starbucks, so my opinion isn’t really balanced, but I guess I have to answer Starbucks!

hmm right now Taylor Swift, I have a secret celebrity crush on her 😀 hands down.
7. What is your FAVORITE piece of equipment in your camera bag?
50mm 1.4, no doubt on that! And I find myself arguing with every other photographer because I most likely shoot like 60% of my weddings with it, and here it’s considered the most unfitting lens for every kind of shoot. People here use it just for still life.
8. What is your all-time FAVORITE snack food?

When you hear ‘no’

By Personal21 Comments

*Side note: Last week, I wrote on twitter and facebook that I was working on a blog post about not giving up – even when you face disappointments. Immediately, I had a dozen comments or emails from my fabulous peers – photographers writing and telling me that this was something that they needed to hear right now. I was blown away by the response I got, and those comments also forced me to follow-through and actually finish writing this post. So, for what it’s worth, I hope that my rambling musings might somehow give you a tiny taste of hope and maybe even a little dose of encouragement today. Hugs, Kimberlee

When you hear ‘no’… What do you do? Give up? Get discouraged? Get angry? I’ve done all of those things… but I want to encourage you all today to stay focused on your GOALS, not on the no’s. Steady persistence and constant working toward your goals is the BEST way to overcome any disappointments (or, at least, that’s what works for me!). I know Marissa and I tend to be ‘glass half full’ gals – especially here on the blog. It’s WAY easier to share with you about our accomplishments, achievements, and the goals we have met. But I just wanted to take a moment to remind you that we are still human… we are just a couple of gals trying to run a successful business… and sometimes we face a TON of hardships, disappointments, and… we hear the word ‘no’ quite often. The thing that keeps us going, though, is NOT to stay focused too long on those no’s. The no’s do not define us… and so, we continue striving and working toward our goals. Here are just a few examples from the past several years…

*When Marissa dreamed her big dream, and planned this awesome business plan (back when she was still in high school!)… so many people said ‘no.’ She was too young, too inexperienced. Glamour Shots was a long gone trend, a cheesy reminder of the 80s, and anything that resembled boudoir photography would only bring up thoughts of tulle, boas, and cheesiness. Marissa didn’t listen to any of that.

*Back in 2006, when M was first starting the boudoir business, and she asked me to join her. I said ‘no.’ And I am so thankful that she was persistent… so thankful that I finally said ‘yes.’ The past five years have been so amazing… it has been a wild ride, a crazy adventure, and I am so thankful to have a business partner who is also a kindred spirit. And to have a business that impacts women, makes them feel beautiful, and gives them crazy-confidence?! I can’t even express how thankful I am that Marissa didn’t listen to me when I said no.

*When we said we would love to ‘Bring Boudoir Back’, most professional photographers laughed, chuckled, and said ‘yeah right… good luck!’ Five years later, I think it’s safe to say that BOUDOIR IS BACK – and it’s here to stay.

*Then in 2007, when we were launching the Boudoir Divas biz plan (‘full-force’), we told several professional photography organizations that we would love share what we were doing with boudoir, on a platform stage at photography conventions. They said ‘no.’ We didn’t listen. We started smaller, speaking around the US at smaller professional photography organizations. And then in 2008, we were finally given the stage as platform speakers at DWF’s convention in Jan ’09… then again last year, we were incredibly honored and BLOWN AWAY at Imaging USA when over 1600 photographers filled our room to hear us speak.

*In 2008, we wrote to several local wedding magazines, telling them that we had an idea for an article about boudoir photography, and how it would be the next big trend for brides. They ALL said ‘no.’ “Boudoir is an old trend from the 80s, and there’s no way it’s making a comeback,” they said. We did not give up. We continued submitting proposals, images, and articles. In Jan 2009 – we graced the pages of Southern Wedding Style Magazine‘s premier issue! Since then, we’ve been lucky enough to find our images and articles in SO many different online and print magazines… San Diego Style Weddings, Ceremony Magazine, Exquisite Weddings, Grace Ormonde, Brides, Rangefinder, and Professional Photographer. I am so glad that we didn’t give up on our dream. That we didn’t listen to the no’s.

*In 2009, we started sending press packets to local TV stations, telling them that we had a great story for them to feature. When we didn’t hear back, we followed up with an email – and a phone call. And then a few months later, we would do it all over again. They all said no. In fact, one news station even sent our press packet back to us – with a note that said, ‘please stop sending these.’ Haha, so funny. But you know what? We weren’t discouraged. We didn’t give up. We just kept focused on the goal. And, as you probably already know… TWO stations finally (relented) and said yes! We were featured on KUSI’s morning show, and then on Fox 5’s morning show last year! Just one more little example that proves that persistence and not giving up REALLY DOES pay off!

*In 2010, we shot a sizzle reel for a reality show about the Boudoir Divas studio. (Maybe we’ll post the video online sometime, it’s pretty funny!) We traveled to LA, to the Warner Bros lot, for our meetings with our producers… signed with a production company… shot the sizzle reel… then the show was pitched to several different networks. So far, everyone has said ‘no.’ Probably a blessing in disguise, as we have both decided that it’s probably better to not have our personal lives strewn across national television. 🙂

*In 2011, we were hoping to become platform speakers at WPPI. We have been submitting our speaking proposals for four years straight now. Once again, we heard ‘no.’ So, if you’re wondering why we’re not speaking this year – it’s not for lack of trying! 🙂 For a little while there, we were super disappointed… we really thought THIS would be our year to share our hearts and our passion with all of you! But then we lifted our heads up, kept our eyes on all of our other goals, gave each other a high five, and said, NEXT YEAR!

So, I hope that these little examples of our ups and downs, our disappointments and all the times we heard ‘no’ will give you some hope today. No matter what stage you’re at with your business – just starting and not sure what the hell you’re doing… or successful with a blossoming business – I want to encourage you to stay focused on your goals. WRITE YOUR GOALS DOWN – put them up on a board in your office where you can look at them every day. When you hear someone say ‘no’ – don’t get down on yourself. Just look up to your goals on your wall, and keep going. To end this post, I wanted to leave you with a quote from one of my favorite childhood authors:

“Listen to the MUSTN’TS, child, listen to the DON’TS – listen to the SHOULDN’TS, the IMPOSSIBLES, the WON’TS – listen to the NEVER HAVES. Then listen close to me – anything can happen, child. ANYTHING can be.”
-Shel Silverstein

Experiencing empowerment for the very first time….

By Personal2 Comments

Our church, The Flood, recently did this amazing thing this holiday; we had a Christmas concert and they also created a place where we could shop. But the shopping experience was incredible because every gift, from jewelry to music to clothing, all went to a different cause. I shopped for my fam but also picked up these duds thats I love from Krochet Kids. The shirt has Africa on it which I had to buy in memory of our amazing trip to Uganda. I also loved this hat because this charity is teaching women in Northern Uganda to crochet and then they bring their hats back to the states and sell them for them, giving women a way to provide a much needed income for their family. Many of these women feel that this is their first time feeling like they will actually be able to support their family needs. Inside the hat is also a signature from the woman who crocheted it and I was stoked to find out I could go online and actually learn about her. Here she is….

Her name is PILOYA JENNIFER and she says, “My dream is to educate my children in order for them to have a brighter future since I did not go to school.”
If you would like to buy one of these adorable hats please go to http://krochetkids.org/
Thanks for allowing me to share! x0x0- Marissa

An entire day with the Divas

By Personal4 Comments

I don’t know if any of you would even CARE to know what goes on here at the studio on a daily basis… but if you’re bored and feel like watching all of the dorky shenanigans that happen at the Boudoir Divas’ studio, then check out this video! It’s a compilation of an entire day at our studio (yesterday). This is a pretty typical day for us – full of projects, working, and a little fun thrown in the mix, of course! Thanks for watching. xoxo, Kimberlee (on behalf of Team Diva)

OH WAIT – I almost forgot! Photographer peeps: Marissa ‘leaks’ our secret plan for our WPPI booth… in case you’re interested, it’s around minute 4:00!

(PS… sorry if it takes forever to load this video – it’s TEN MINUTES LONG! hahaha, yeah… we don’t blame you if you don’t wanna watch the whole thing) 🙂 Oh, and have you subscribed to the Boudoir Divas’ Youtube Channel yet???

Christmas time! Closed for the holidays :)

By PersonalNo Comments

I CAN’T believe Christmas is this Saturday!  I know we all say it every year, but it seriously came so fast!  We have had a very busy holiday season and are excited to have a little R & R (as I am sure you are all as well).  We just wanted to post our holiday business hours, as it may affect an order you place on our Boudoir Shop…so PLEASE READ!

Remember, we ship USPS PRIORITY mail (2-3 business days for domestic, 6-10 business days for international).  The HOLIDAY SALE is still going on at the shop, and will continue while we are closed.  Pricing will go back to normal when we come back into the office on JANUARY 3rd. So if you want to take advantage of the awesome deals (as well as get a digital copy of the Workshop in a Book before it goes into the Diva Vault), then make sure to place your order BEFORE January 3rd!

(also note that while we are closed, we will not be checking voice mails or emails; those will be responded to on January 3rd) 🙂

Many of you are asking about the Lighting DVD and we are hoping to have definite answers soon!  The overall DVD is finally finished!  We just have to figure out how long until we get copies at our studio.  We will send out an update once pre-sale is available on the boudoir shop!

The “New” Burlesque

By PersonalNo Comments

Is it just us or does the burlesque style seem to be making a HUGE come back?  From movies, to fashion trends, we LOVE it all!  Check out the trailer for Burlesque, starring Christina Aguilera!

This is such a fun theme to put into your own Boudoir Shoot as well! Adding little details such as a chair, scarf, or a fun hat can make a big difference and give you that burlesque look.  Check out a burlesque inspired boudoir shoot we did awhile back:

Here’s another example of one of our burlesque theme photo shoots.  This is one we actually shot back in March of 2009 and still one our FAVES!

American Photo Magazine also had an article on “The New Burlesque” and we just had to share this great photo taken from the magazine….

So who else is loving this burlesque theme?  Any one else done some crazy fun shoots inspired by this trend?

EVERY woman deserves to feel beautiful!

By Inspiration, PersonalOne Comment

One of the mottos here at the Boudoir Divas studio is: “EVERY WOMAN DESERVES TO FEEL BEAUTIFUL!” At our speaking presentations and workshops that we’ve led over the past four years, this has been a huge push that we always share a LOT about.

Check out this video to hear more of our heart on this issue… (It’s a video that we created for our CLIENTS at the studio in San Diego; we always want to be sure that we are telling our clients about what we believe, because we want them to know WHY we do what we do!)
