Free Boudoir Online Workshop Course

By Boudoir Tips, Uncategorized

Are you an aspiring boudoir photographer? Then this Free Online Boudoir Workshop Course is for you.

Hey, Marissa Boucher here. I own The Boudoir Divas, which is a boudoir studio in San Diego, Ca AND now Nashville, TN. We have been in business for 15 years and photographed more than 3500 women. Some flying to us from all over the world.

We believe that boudoir is the most rewarding job. It’s purposeful (most importantly)…. and profitable. And here’s the thing, we believe every woman should have a boudoir shoot. And for that reason we ALSO believe that there is PLENTY of business to go around. That’s why we don’t shy away from showing you ALL of our boudoir shooting, posing, business and marketing secrets!

I thought it would be fun to show you the first course of our online boudoir workshop…. for free! This is 1 or 8 courses, and I love it because it gives you a real idea of what it’s like in our studio.

Some things you may notice is that we have an amazing space… but that’s not necessary for boudoir photography. In fact we just recently closed down that big studio to be more mobile! Now we rent space and do what we call “Pop Up” Boudoir Studios in different cities. So both options work wonderfully. In fact I even know people that primarily just photograph boudoir in the outdoors.

If you are just starting out, here are some key areas to focus on.

  1. Get VERY comfortable with your camera. A professional doesn’t struggle with settings often. Learn to shoot in manual mode and really understand how shutter, aperture and ISO work together.
  2. Learn how to find flattering light, or create flattering light in any situation. We don’t always get to work in controlled environments, so it’s key to know where and how to find flattering light. I even bring a light with me if I know I will be shooting in a space that I’m not super familiar with.
  3. Memorize 12 go-to poses so that if you have a day where your brain is just struggling (we all have those days) you will be prepared! We love this too because not having to stress about posing allows you to focus on client and give them the best boudoir experience possible.
  4. Build your portfolio. Practice on any friends or models that will let you. It takes awhile to get really comfortable shooting boudoir, so you’ll want to practice. And… I doubt you will get a lot of bookings if your profile only has images of the same few clients.
  5. A business model that works for you. Before you fully launch, make sure you run all the numbers and your expenses. And NOT just your business expenses. You will need to know how much to make for your paycheck as well. No point in having a fun and rewarding career if it doesn’t pay the bills!

Those are just a few ideas to getting started!

And if you need help… I’m here for you! We have an entire shop dedicated to all our boudoir resources.

And if that wasn’t enough, we also have Marissa’s World! This all access membership gets you a NEW valuable episode every month for just 16! Here we want to create new Episodes, that are tutorials shot in a more fun reality style, all geared towards those that photograph women.

Thank you for stopping by our blog. Keep looking around, we have TONS of valuable info on here!

With gratitude,

Our Awesome Retreat Attendees

By Workshops2 Comments

As we have mentioned in some of our other posts, one of the reasons we really wanted to a longer, more intensive, 4-day retreat (versus our usual shorter 2-day workshops), was because we wanted to get a chance to really get to know all of our fab attendees. To each of our attendees – we are so glad that we were able to spend these 4 days with you, and we are so incredibly honored that you made the investment and took the time to travel to hang out with us in San Diego. We feel like we were able to truly get to know each of you a little bit, to understand your business, personality and to really be able to speak into exactly what it is you are doing with your boudoir biz.

Another added bonus is the freaking awesome camaraderie that comes from sharing so much time (not to mention sharing a cool home) with others who are your peers in this industry. To spend time collaborating with these incredible people who are doing everything in their power to build a dream similar to yours. The ideas, inspiration, brainstorming, and questioning that is bounced around is like nothing else when it comes to pursuing your dreams. I think it’s safe to say that we are 100% happy with the decision to start the Boudoir Retreats! These are some headshot images that we took (although most gals got a boudoir shoot at our studio too, so you may want to head to our studio blog, www.sandiegoboudoir.com, and see who gave us permission to show them off). 😉 All of these photographers are killing it in the boudoir industry on their own, and it kinda blows our mind that they flew to us to learn, as we have learned heaps as well from being with them and bouncing a ton of ideas around with everyone. These are no longer just our ‘industry peers’ or our ‘Retreat attendees’. So without further ado – here they are, our awesome peers, boudoir retreat attendees, and even cooler than that, our new friends….. boudoir retreat attendees boudoir divas

First up are the lovebirds, Andrew and Maggi Woo, from British Colombia, Canada. These two are such a great pair, and you can tell that they really complement each other not only in their sweeet relationship but also in their business – Maggi Woo Photography. She shoots beautiful images and then shares her work on her blog, through her gorgeous words (seriously, you have to check out her blog – she’s such a great writer!) And then this exec, Andrews, is all about helping out on the biz side, supporting her as lovebirdy husband does and giving tons of insight with his extensive experience in the business world. These two are unstoppable!

andrewandmaggie

Next up is a face you may recognize… We know this gal pretty well at this point, as she has been to our workshop and studio a couple of times before! And did we mention are bananas about her. You just might know her cuz she’s cool like that, makin’ a name for herself in this industry and standing out – it’s the fabulous Denise of Modern Love Photography! We know that our paths will continue to cross in the future. Sorry, Denise, but you’re stuck with us, whether you like it or not. 😉 Go check out her site and see all the cool stuff she is up to (including a new ebook coming out soon!)

denise

Apparently this next girl knows how to brand – I mean, just look at that hair! 🙂 Introducing Jennie of Pink Photography. Jennie owns a studio in Richmond, Virginia, and this girl is going places. Jennie is one of those gals who may seem reserved at first, but that’s just until she’s had a chance to warm up. She is such a sweetheart, and it is easy to see that her clients feel incredibly comfortable around her. There’s no doubt in our minds about why she has already built up a successful boudoir biz!

jennie

Next up is the bubbly-life-of-the-party Krystyn! This girl knows how to make friend. And geez louise she’s another one who will make you feel comfortable in two seconds. How did we get so lucky, to be surrounded with such sweet and wonderful people at this Retreat?! Krystyn has a studio in Pittsburgh that is both a boudoir studio AND lingerie boutique. Super cool. Check her out here: KBS Photography. Also, you have GOT to read her blog post about her experience BEHIND the camera – we just loved reading about her time at our studio and thought she did such a great job of explaining the experience.

Krystyn

Korin, the artist also known as Martina, comes off as pretty chill, but let’s be honest, if you know her, you know that this gal has some unexpected fire. 🙂 (Which, come on, we all have to have a little ‘fire’ to be in this line of work, right?) Korin of Wonderland Boudoir has a successful portrait photography biz in Dallas, Texas – and we just love her style. Plus, her laugh is pretty infectious. We’re excited to see her biz continue to grow and grow!

martina

Natasha! Ah! I think this girl can Carebear-stare a smile right into you heart, hahaha! Seriously though, she is salt-of-the-Earth-good-people. We loved getting to know her (and especially loved hearing her story of how she met her hubby!) Introducing Natasha!!! (Her website is under construction so we’ll have to post a link to it once it’s up!) She is about to launch a really cool concept… a salon-meets-boudoir studio, in South Dakota! We think this gal has exactly what it takes to create the business that she is envisioning, and we can’t wait to see it come to fruition. Watch out, because she’s going to take the South Dakota market by STORM.

natasha

Ok and now last but certainly not least… Miss Agi Magyar, who was definitely the one who traveled the farthest for this Retreat – she came all the way from Sydney, Australia! We met Agi last year when she came to have a destination boudoir shoot with us in Vegas, and we knew we would become instant friends from the very moment we met her. When she said she was coming to the Retreat, we were super excited because we knew she’d bring a fun energy to the experience. Definitely go check out her website, she’s doing great things – Agi M Photography! We also loved reading her review and recap of the Boudoir Retreat on this blog post.

AgiM

We also have a little video of Agi that we wanted to share here. We were filming videos throughout the Retreat, and at one point, Agi asked if she could get on camera and film herself. So she took matters into her own hands and filmed herself speaking! We didn’t know what she had up her sleeves, and we didn’t even have a chance to watch it until recently. Thank you, Agi, for taking our camera and sharing what you did. Your words truly touched us.

And THANK YOU to all of our Retreat Attendees – ahem – FRIENDS – who came to the 2014 Retreat. We are so thankful that we had this experience with you and we are excited to continue this journey with you as we all continue to pursue our passion of making women look and feel beautiful through the empowering boudoir photography experience.

boudoir divas retreat

We have had a lot of people inquire about our future Boudoir Retreats, and we are happy to say that we will be launching the next Retreat VERY SOON!
We had such a great time at this one and we can’t wait to launch one for 2015! And in case you can’t wait that long, we are also THINKING about doing some 1-day workshops this fall on the East Coast. (Looking for 3 hosts on the East Coast who would be willing to let us take over your studio and let in a group of photographers for a day of learning!

EDIT TO ADD: We have now officially launched our 2015 Boudoir Retreat AND a 1-Day Boudoir Workshop in Miami!

Boudoir Workshop Review

By Workshops2 Comments

“Hello Ladies! My name is Kaitlyne, I took your workshop I think about 4 years ago now! Anyways I just wanted to take the time to thank you! When I walked in your studio I was so amateur I had no idea what I was getting myself into, I had just learned what boudoir photography actually was. I came in with my canon rebel shooting in full auto… yup pretty embarrassing now! But you fully accepted me and even took the time to teach me how to shoot manually ON TOP of everything else I learned that weekend. Long story short, 4 years later I run a very successful business, one of the most well known in Edmonton, Canada. We (Yup I have an amazing all female staff now) have a gorgeous studio complete with a sales area and salon. So THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for accepting me, teaching me, and answering my silly questions. You never once made me feel unwelcome or dumb. I have created my own brand and style and it all started with you ladies! Thank you 🙂 All the Best, -Kaitlyne Tyner GreenTee Photography

Speaking at Fovitech Peru 2013

By Speaking Programs, WorkshopsOne Comment

I know we say this a lot, but it doesn’t change the truth: we are SO blessed to be given opportunities to travel around the world, and share about our passion for boudoir photography! Last week we were able to travel to Lima, Peru, for Fovitech 2013. We loved traveling to this country, and loved meeting some wonderful photographers! We were able to speak about “Secrets of Boudoir” at our platform program, and then a couple days later, we had 20 photographers join us for our full-day workshop! It was a really great experience, and we hope to go back again someday!

Of course no trip to another country would be complete without the fun van rides….

We got the royal treatment from the organizers of the convention – including a limo pick-up from the airport! So we wanted to give a huge shout-out to Aldo & his sweet wife Chevela, for being so kind to us through the whole week. We are thankful to have met you both – thanks for your hospitality!

We also love trying out new foods while we’re traveling. And while I (K) wasn’t able to taste this next dish (doc’s orders, no raw seafood for a few more months) 😉 – Marissa sure LOVED the Peruvian ceviche!

We also did a little cooking ourselves, in our awesome apartment (with a killer ocean view!)

As you know, we LOVE speaking and teaching about boudoir photography… and this workshop was definitely a memorable one. We really enjoyed meeting these fab photographers from Peru (and a few other countries as well).

Before we share more photos from the workshop, though – we have to tell this quick story about the photo below. We have traveled to 4 countries with these lights in the past, and have NEVER had an issue with them! Until last week, when Marissa plugged this bad boy into the socket, turned the light on, and BAM – that thing seriously exploded. Like, I mean, the light bulb shot out flames and then shattered glass flew across the room. And then people came running into our room to make sure that wasn’t a gun shot. Needless to say, it got our adrenaline pumping just a bit! 🙂 And thankfully, we were able to use other lights to demo with.

Rest In Peace, little light. Ok – now back to some more photos of the workshop. 🙂

We also have to say a big thank you to our FABULOUS translator, miss Julietta Swartzmann! Julietta is so wonderful; you may recognize her (from our boudoir workshop in Madrid), and we just love how easy it is to work with her! Thanks again Julietta – can’t wait for the next adventure. 🙂

Boudoir Divas Workshop Review

By WorkshopsNo Comments

We had SUCH a fabulous time at our April Boudoir Workshop!!! We truly loved this group of photographers, and we are so thrilled that we were able to spend 2 full days working and sharing with them. And we just love it when we get to read reviews from our workshop attendees. It’s so much fun to hear how they enjoyed their experience, and to see the workshop through their eyes. So we just loved reading Ashley’s recap from the workshop over on her blog.
boudoir tips
Ashley, thank you so much for sharing about your experience! I loved seeing all of your photos and reading about the workshop from your perspective. So glad we got to finally meet in-person, and I hope we see more of you in the future! xoxo, K&M

PS – Ashley’s business, The Secret PinUp, is one of our awesome photographers over on Boudoir International! Check out her profile page here.

Last Workshop this year….. and maybe longer (?)

By WorkshopsNo Comments

I know, to be honest it pains us to say it. But this just might be our last workshop…ever??? Whoa, okay, now… we know that’s a really big statement. Don’t get us wrong here – we LOVE our workshops so very much, and we believe in them majorly. We have seen our workshop attendees grow to become boudoir mega stars, by doing so many of the things that we taught them at our past workshops. But life is really busy for us right now, and our calendar is slammed this year, so we thought we should be honest with you all about our workshop plans for the year. We HIGHLY encourage you to come to our APRIL workshop, as we aren’t sure if there will be another one at the SD studio in 2013. And we do love teaching in our studio, because it’s at that location where the most learning truly happens – it’s where you can see where we work, get a behind-the-scenes tour, and some awesome hands-on experience! We do still have some spots open at the workshop this month, so if you’re interested, please go here to check it out… or email us! [email protected]

We are so looking forward to meeting all of our April workshop attendees, and we can’t wait to spend 2 full days with you all, hanging out and sharing with you all. See you in a few weeks! xoxo, K&M

An open and heartfelt testimonial from Kellene

By Boudoir Photo Shoots, Inspiration, WorkshopsNo Comments

Thank you so much Kellene, (KellieMae)  for not only flying all the way to us to attend our boudoir workshop and have a photo shoot, but then taking the time to write about your experience. Your heartfelt honesty was incredibly touching and I think everyone who reads your story will not only be moved, but also identify with it in some way or another. I am sure you would all agree when I say that when someone is candid and vulnerable with their emotions and experiences, it can be healing for us, the reader, as well. So thank you Kellene for sharing with us.

paris inspired boudoir photos

Here are a few snippets from her blog post …
“I cannot put into words how much this experience has meant to me or has changed the way I feel about myself. For the first time in almost 4 years, I am looking at myself through different eyes, and realizing that I am STILL beautiful. The death of my son robbed me of so many things that I didn’t realize until just recently, and to be able to look at my images and not just see myself as a “failure” is such a weight lifted off my shoulders. God works in incredible ways, and I know that my journey has been preparing me to help other women like myself, who have self-blame, self-doubt, and low self-esteem. I’ve seen the gift I’ve given my clients as I’ve watched them in awe over their own images. I’ve heard them say things like “I’ve never felt that beautiful EVER!” If I can give just one woman hope, then I have done His work.

To now have experienced it for myself, I know what power it truly has on a person. Despite some negative responses I’ve received this week about my line of work, I’m choosing to take the high road. Because frankly, until you’ve experienced what women like myself have, you will never comprehend the power of hope that images like these can give you.”

“So, a HUGE thank you to Denna, and the rest of the FABULOUS Boudoir Divas; for teaching amazing techniques, and above all, for doing His work in changing the lives of women, desperate to find the beauty that God has granted them… because all women are beautiful and all women should celebrate it. The wounds that these images have healed in me are beyond words. I can now look in the mirror and not just see a mother of a dead son, or the scarred up body of a mother who has been through traumatic births, but as the beautiful person I am, DESPITE the journey I’ve been through. I feel empowered and beyond blessed for this experience that God has so graciously bestowed upon me. Cheers and blessings to The Boudoir Divas… you truly are doing the work of His hands!”

We encourage you to take the time to read the full report of her personal account of  her workshop and shoot experience on her blog. Kellene, thank you again. You are gorgeous inside and out and you look so radiant in your pics. PS. Your tattoos are HOT! (also another reason to visit her blog, check out those tats 😉 )

The “my heart races because I am so freaking inspired” PHOTO CHALLENGE

By Boudoir Photo Shoots, Boudoir Tips, Inspiration3 Comments

Hi Guys! I know, I know, I saw that our last post was in May and I was like “oh freaking crap” where did the time go!?! Well, if I am honest it went so fast because we were busy. Or, well, having an awesome time. Kimee is a newlywed so I think we all know what she has been up to (tee hee) and I am just kinda loving the freedom that I have these days. We have spent so many years pressed to the grind getting this business exactly where we want it and…. well…. IT IS EXACTLY WHERE WE WANT IT! (Thank you Team Diva, you guys are the shiz) And thank you Lord! Seriously. Thank you because it is by your grace that you have made this possible.

I mean don’t get me wrong, we work. We work a fair amount. But only because we LOVE what we do. And not because we are trying to push this heavy ball (albeit for a time, we were in love with that ball in certain ways) up a hill. We have a well-thought-out BUSINESS MODEL, probably the best team here at the studio anyone could dream of, and we get still get to shoot clients and also play with photography in the capacity that every artist aspires to. If you come to our workshops or speaking events you’ve probably heard us talk about so-called “artistic freedom” quite a bit. But really it’s as simple as this… doing a photo shoot concept that you have visualized simply because for the love of art. Yes, YOU are an ARTIST! And let me tell you what; when you do this, your heart will race while you click that shutter because instead of taking some existing reality or a client’s expectations and trying to mold them into something that’s killer (which is good), you actually get to take your visualized brain child and run with it, have control of it, have fun with it, and showcase it (which is guuuuuh-reat!).  This is something we’ve told our past workshop attendees to do for years, and now we’re telling all of you – our blog readers – about it.  It’s so amazing.

With our editorial shoots, it’s not about extravagance all the time. It’s mostly about vision, strategy, and control. So yes we have done shoots with hot air balloons and beds hoisted above four guys’ heads who are donning  penguin tuxes and top hats. And yes we have lugged a water-logged bed through the ocean pretending to be pirates.  But with those instances, we honestly may have spent way more time people- and prop-managing then having the full control and getting exactly what we want. There is a time and a place for extravagance (and maybe for your health’s sake once every other year). With that said, we have done this quite a few times. And I have learned a bit in those shoots. Some good, some, well, not. Since we love to do “Top Ten” countdowns (mainly ‘cuz I will lose focus otherwise lol), in our opinion this is what has worked for us in terms of capturing a more epic photo shoot, take it or leave it ;p …

10. An actress that inspires. Hire a model or a past client that can move. She has to have that look in their eye that makes you smile the whole time you’re behind your lens. Don’t get me wrong, we LOVE shooting REAL women. We shoot over 600 real, normal (non-modely) women every year. But when we do our big concept or editorial shoots we usually use either a pro model, or a friend/past client who we know can work it. We really want someone that is comfortable and needs just a little instruction. Someone who can act as our muse. If you know of someone who can make their eyes sparkle on command, well that is who should be in front of your lens for your editorial photo shoot.

9. Go nuts on the inspiration. Collect your ideas, start an inspiration board, and go all crazy with your dreaming and planning. Then once your brain is stimulated and all its crazy circuits are firing off, chuck the ideas you have collected. Don’t look at them at all and then close your eyes and just dream. What did you love when you were little? Who is your fave fictional character? What scenery are you in love with? What is sexy to you? What grabs your attention? Sketch the ideas (even if it’s crappy stick figures), do a brain dump, draw a ven diagram, do whatever you need to express your thoughts and vision and get it on paper in front of you.

8. Create a color palette that turns you on. Sometimes it’s not about scenery. Sometimes it’s as simple as the color wheel. Pull out your kiddo’s crayola markers and see what colors you like paired together. Then plan her outfit, make-up and scene (even if it’s simple) accordingly. What colors look wrong together? Is it because they are wrong that they really just look so, so right?

7. Put it on the calendar.  After you read this post, let’s say you think, “sheesh Louish I think I want to do this.” Go immediately to your calendar, and find a day for a few hours to plan the session. The inspiration, the model, the location, the MUA. Maybe you don’t have a few hours because you have a newborn, or you are like Kimee and you have a new husband who wants to cook you dinner & make you sushi every night… well, then go to your calendar and schedule just 25 mins for the inspiration brainstorm – on 3 different days. No excuses man. Just MSH: make shiz happen. Then also add your epic photo shoot date itself to the calendar.  As we always say, if you don’t schedule time to actually take these steps of action… then how is it going to happen?!

6. The location. Choose a location that is interesting, has great lighting, is safe, and not too busy/crowded (remember control is important). If you find a location that gets you all pumped-up visually because it so different than what you normally shoot, then you need to shoot there! Oh and PS, the biz side of my brain has to add to make sure wherever you are shooting is covered by your insurance.

5. Fear and loathing in lighting. Play with a lighting set up that you rarely use and freaks you out. Just because we said you have all the control in this shoot, doesn’t mean we don’t want you to feel a little healthy stress & nervousness. Get out of your comfort zone because that’s what exceptional artists do. Maybe don’t bring the light or reflector, if that’s what you normally do.  Or maybe challenge yourself to shoot at a time of day where you don’t have all the settings memorized. Remember that you don’t have client expectations to meet here, because you are shooting for YOU. So if it all goes to crap you can laugh about it later.

4. Act like a boss. Hire (or get a starry eyed new photographer) to be your assistant. Because when you lock in your sights on that one shot that makes your heart race and then “fill in the blank” tips over and you miss that shot, well, trust me – you will kick yourself for not having an assistant to pick it up right in the nick of time! Even if an assistant costs you somewhere around $80-$150 bucks, it’s worth it. BUT!!! Make sure you are comfortable bossing them around. I am a pretty good employer, but when I lock in my sights on an image that makes me want to pee my pants it’s so good… I act like a boss. I act like the damn boss’ boss, and I boss people around (with a friendly “please” thrown in at the end, of course). Because  beautiful/picturesque/wacky art means the world to me.

3. Beautiful/picturesque/wacky art. While shooting, pretend you are tipsy. Also pretend you are allergic to shooting the “correct” way you always do. I get my best shots when I pretend I am incapable of getting my typical “go-to” shot.  Step out of your “norm” – force yourself to try a new style of shooting, and see what happens!

2. Processing. This isn’t a wedding. These aren’t proofs. You don’t need a folder of 200 beautiful images that overwhelm you so much that you either a) do nothing with them or b) create a slideshow no one will watch to the end of because it lasts 3.23 hours.

Go through and find the top 10 images from the shoot. Do a first cut, then a second cut – and for that last cut, pretend you are the editor of Vogue looking at a new photographer’s shots. Be cut-throat. Be brutal. Only choose the best of the best. Then take those  TOP 10 images and edit each one 3 different ways (we use Lightroom and create virtual copies), and finally, export them. Then come back on another day with a fresh eye. From those 30 images (3 copies of each, of your top 10 pics) that you exported, chose 1 from each of the 3 duplicates. Then airbrush and sharpen (right now we are in love with Kubota Magic Sharp).  That’s what we do for our editorial shoots, and it works well for us.  It gives us a chance to process our images differently than we would for a normal client.

1. Artists deserve a gallery showcase. We haven’t had the privilege of having a gallery showcase… yet. That might come when we are like 50 and can hold our own against Annie Leibovitz. But for now we make our own showcase through our blog, twitter, and Facebook. Then we get a huge, gorgeous canvas of our FAVORITE image from Bay Photo for the studio. This is a must. And THEN, we also order a beautiful portfolio book from Graphistudio to show off at our bridal fairs and display in our lobby/boutique. Because while this shoot was done for the love of what we do, the icing on the cake is the fact that it will get other people excited about us and our work. A bonus is that it will generate more hype (and more clients!) than we could’ve imagined. Art for the sake of celebrating beauty – that just happens to also create an income…. well that, my friends, is the good life. And we are so, so grateful.

The Challenge. Now we challenge you! Are you in? Comment below and tell us the dates of your planning sessions and shoots below, and link to your blog so we can all keep each other accountable! (you don’t have to share what you’re planning, cause we know you aren’t gonna spill the beans on your concept ;).
